From Homework to Big Ideas: Learning How to Think With AI
AI Is Already Part of How We Figure Things Out

If you’ve ever asked AI to help brainstorm an essay idea, summarize a long article, or explain something confusing the night before a test, you’re definitely not the only one.
AI tools are quickly becoming part of how many of us explore ideas, figure things out, and get unstuck when we’re learning something new. According to a recent Pew Research Center study, about 26% of U.S. teens say they’ve already used AI tools like ChatGPT for schoolwork, more than double the share reported just two years earlier.
In other words, AI isn’t just another app. It’s starting to feel more like a thinking partner.
Big change is happening
As AI becomes more powerful, researchers are beginning to talk about something called the “third digital divide.”
The first digital divide was about internet access. The second was about devices. The third divide is about something different: who knows how to use AI to amplify their thinking—and who doesn’t.
That difference can matter more than it seems.
New analysis from McKinsey Global Institute suggests that automation and generative AI could reshape a large share of entry-level and early-career jobs. In fact, about half of “gateway” jobs—roles that traditionally help people move into stable careers—could eventually become automated.

As work evolves alongside AI, the ability to understand and use these tools is becoming an increasingly valuable skill. But access to AI tools—and opportunities to learn how they work—are not evenly distributed across schools and communities.
Without intentional action, this gap could grow.
Why Libraries Are Becoming AI Learning Spaces
For generations, public libraries have been places where anyone can explore knowledge freely—no matter their background.
Now they can play a similar role for AI. That’s the idea behind Gemini AI Labs at the Los Angeles Public Library.
These open learning spaces give students, families, and curious learners a chance to experiment with AI tools in a supportive environment. Visitors can explore how AI can help with homework, creative projects, coding, research, and problem-solving—all while learning how to use these technologies responsibly.
The goal isn’t just to provide powerful tools. It’s to make sure everyone has the chance to understand and use them.
AI Isn’t Just a Tool — It’s a New Way to Explore Ideas
The real opportunity isn’t just having access to AI. It’s learning how to ask better questions, experiment with bigger ideas, and use technology to build things that didn’t exist before.
And that future works best when everyone gets the chance to explore it.
