Maung’s Story
A 4-Year-Old’s Call After Myanmar’s 7.7 Quake

What happened in Myanmar?
On March 28, Myanmar was rocked by a catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake — one of the strongest and deadliest natural disasters the country has experienced in decades.
In a matter of seconds, entire villages were reduced to rubble. Homes crumbled. Schools collapsed. Roads split open.
Families were buried under debris. The scale of destruction is staggering — with over 4.3 million people affected and thousands still unaccounted for.
The ones suffering the most? Children.

Affected Children
2.7 million out of the 9 million people in the hardest-hit areas were children.

Displaced Children
Out of over 3 million people displaced due to the earthquake, approximately 1.2 million are children.
Who is Maung?
Maung Nyan is a 4-year-old boy we met just days after the quake, in an overcrowded shelter.
He was sitting quietly, clutching a torn stuffed bear 🧸— the only thing he had left.
When we gently asked about his family, he shared this heartbreaking memory.
I was playing with my bear.
Mama was cooking.
Then the ground got loud.
Everything was shaking. I fell down.
I screamed, ‘Mama!’
There was so much dust. I couldn’t see Mama.
I shouted — ‘Mama? Mama?’
But she didn’t come.
Now I sleep in a big tent. Lots of people. But no Mama.
I have my bear. I hug him tight.
Where is Mama?
⚠️ Millions of children are left in danger— just like Maung.
